SECONDMENTS
Thackray Burgess has innovated the delivery
of legal counsel to fit clients' evolving
needs by seconding or "lending"
Thackray Burgess' lawyers to their organizations
as their need arises.
A secondment is an arrangement in which
one or more Thackray Burgess lawyers or
articling students are dedicated to a particular
client for an extended period of time. Thackray
Burgess lawyers have offered seconded assistance
to energy focused organizations throughout
Canada and in overseas locations.
Secondment arrangements offer a number of
advantages to a client when compared to
the traditional manner in which legal services
are provided:
 enabling
the lawyer to spend dedicated, regular time
in the client's place of business, allowing
the lawyer to better learn the client's
business practices, personnel and legal
needs
enabling
the client to plan for regular and complete
access to a lawyer
enabling
the client to access knowledgeable legal
professionals experienced in one's business,
without having to add permanent employees
to one's staff
allows the client to meet specific legal
requirements during particularly busy periods
of time, without the expense of a long term
commitment to an employee
During the firm's history, Thackray Burgess
has served our clients' needs in a variety
of secondment arrangements:
senior
lawyers have served as acting "General
Counsel" of oil companies, while the
clients were temporarily without a permanently
employed General Counsel, or while the General
Counsels of such clients were involved in
limited term special projects
senior
lawyers were seconded to oversee significant
acquisition or disposition programs where
the programs required a temporary, but full
time and committed, on site legal presence
junior
and intermediate lawyers were seconded to
assist organizations in providing internal
legal services while permanent employees
were recruited to fill open positions
junior,
intermediate and senior lawyers were seconded
to various energy trading organizations,
where particular areas of expertise were
required in the ongoing provision of legal
services in the client's place of business.
